
AMU Old Boys’ Association Lucknow Pays Tribute to Maulana Hasrat Mohani on His 74th Death Anniversary
Lucknow, May 13, 2025 — The AMU Old Boys’ Association (AMUOBA), Lucknow Chapter, solemnly commemorated the 74th death anniversary of Maulana Hasrat Mohani, a revered freedom fighter, eminent poet, journalist, and statesman. The tribute event was a heartfelt homage to the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) alumnus who coined the powerful slogan “Inquilab Zindabad”, which went on to become a rallying cry of India’s independence movement.
Held under the banner of Karawan-e-Adab, the literary wing of AMUOBA Lucknow, the event brought together alumni and admirers to reflect on the indelible contributions of Maulana Hasrat Mohani. His fearless voice, poetic brilliance, and unwavering commitment to freedom continue to inspire generations.
“Hai mashq-e-sukhan jaari, chakki ki mushaqqat bhi,
Ek taraf tamaasha hai, Hasrat ki tabee’at bhi”
The Urdu couplet encapsulated the essence of his life, reflecting a relentless pursuit of intellectual freedom amid physical hardship.
SM Shoeb, President of AMUOBA Lucknow, remarked, “Maulana Hasrat Mohani was not only a revolutionary thinker but also a symbol of integrity and courage. Remembering him is to remind ourselves of the values that shaped India’s struggle for independence.”
Anwar Habeeb Alvi, Convener of Karawan-e-Adab, emphasized the poet-politician’s literary genius and journalistic legacy, adding, “Hasrat’s poetry bridged romance with revolution, and his pen was as mighty as any weapon in our fight for freedom.”
Shahla Haque, Honorary Secretary of AMUOBA Lucknow, reflected on the relevance of Hasrat Mohani’s ideals today, saying, “In an age where voices of dissent are rare, his fearless expression reminds us of the importance of speaking truth to power.”
