On behalf of the Aligarh Muslim University Old Boys’ Association (AMUOBA), Lucknow, fateha was offered and floral tributes were paid at the grave of the legendary Urdu poet Majaz Lucknowi at Nishatganj Cemetery, Lucknow, on the occasion of his 70th death anniversary. A large number of admirers of Majaz, including alumni of Aligarh Muslim University, were present to pay homage.
Majaz Lucknowi, popularly known as the Keats of Urdu, was born on 19 October 1911 in Rudauli and passed away at the young age of 44 on 5 December 1955 in Lucknow. Despite his brief life, Majaz left an indelible imprint on Urdu literature. Paying tribute to his genius, renowned poet Josh Malihabadi once remarked that had Majaz lived longer, he would have become the greatest poet of the century. A poet of romance as well as revolution, Majaz also penned the immortal Tarana-e-Aligarh:
“Yeh mera chaman hai mera chaman, main apne chaman ka bulbul hoon…”
Among those who paid floral tributes were AMUOBA Lucknow President S. M. Shoeb, Prof. Riaz Mehdi, Dr. Abdul Quddoos Hashmi, Dr. Ahtesham Ahmad Khan, Afzal Ahmad Siddiqui, Anwar Habeeb Alvi, Shahla Haque (Secretary, AMUOBA Lucknow), Muinuddin (Joint Secretary, AMUOBA Lucknow), and Tauqeer Ahmad (Executive Member, AMUOBA Lucknow). On the occasion, Ali Sagar recited Majaz’s famous poem .
Others present included Prof. Shakeel Ahmad Qidwai, Dr. Suhail Ahmad Farooqui, Tariq Siddiqui, Tahira Hasan (Social activist ), Architect Rahman, Zafrul Hasan Siddiqui, Abdullah Siddiqui (Advocate), Mohammad Shameem, Ashar Alig, Ahmad Siddiqui, Snehil Agrawal, Waqar Alvi, Imran Ahmad Abbasi, and Khalid Jeelani.
The gathering remembered Majaz not merely as a poet, but as an enduring symbol of love, idealism, and progressive thought whose poetry continues to inspire generations.
